Plumelin
A rural community where life is good
The town of Plumelin offers its population a complete range of shops and services, such as the municipal media library, the multi-purpose hall and sports complexes.
The "Kingoland" leisure park, visible from the RN24, offers around thirty attractions for young and old. On the other side of the RN24, the Fruitière de Colpo presents a wide range of jams, sorbets and fruit products.
On the other hand, the diversity of the landscapes, particularly in the southern part and along the Tarun valley, offers particularly hilly and wooded areas, making Plumelin a lively and pleasant town.
A bit of history...
Plumelin is an old parish that dates back to the arrival of the Bretons in Armorica, and dedicated to St-Melaine, bishop of Rennes in the 5th century. The town has preserved two chapels, St-Jean du Poteau and St-Quidy. The first takes its name from a nearby post that was topped with a statue dedicated to St-Jean. This rectangular chapel dates from 1767. Inside is a rich marble altar. Not far from there is the fountain, a listed monument also dating from 1767, whose originality is to have 3 basins. The water that flows at a constant flow is said to have curative properties.
The St-Quidy chapel, built in the 15th century, takes its name from a local hermit. The interior houses the statuaries of St-Antoine and St-Armel. Under the broken arch paneling appear the tie beams swallowed by crocodile heads. On the wall plates, we can make out hammered coats of arms. The St-Melaine church dating from the end of the 15th century is marked by alterations from different periods. The interior houses a beautiful 18th century altarpiece. A fountain from 1850 is adjacent to the church, to which of course curative values are attributed.
The hikes
Two circuits crisscross the town, and allow, among other things, to pass by the impressive rock of Kervadail said to weigh 500 tons!
The community of Kermaria
The community of the Daughters of Jesus currently has 1,500 Sisters spread across 13 countries. The community of Kermaria, initially founded in Bignan and moved to Plumelin in 1860, is its Mother House. It is also a center of devotion to St. Joseph, very visited throughout the year.
From November 10, 2013 and for two years, Kermaria will host a major exhibition devoted to the war of 1914, seen from the angle of the contribution of the nuns to the care of the wounded.
