Plumelec
Many assets for this town located on the edge of Gallo country
A rich history since the Neolithic period... a diverse heritage... a camper van area... nationally renowned cycle races... Plumelec also has the distinction of having 3 bell towers, in the town of Plumelec, in Callac and in Saint-Aubin!
The great lordships resist through the ages
In the Middle Ages, Plumelec was home to several powerful lordships, including those of Callac and Cadoudal. Organized around castles that are still visible, they often served as a means of organizing resistance. First against the Republicans... during the French Revolution, Callac Castle served as a refuge for refractory priests, royalist leaders and Chouans... Then, during the Second World War, this same castle allowed the secret organization of resistance fighters led by Captain Marienne.
The memorial and the Moulin de la Grée perpetuate the memory of the tragic events which took place in the Landes de Lanvaux, during the parachuting of the S.A.S commandos on June 5, 1944.
An exceptional historical and architectural heritage
From the Neolithic period, the beautiful listed dolmen of Milgourdy remains.
In addition to the castles and manors (Callac, Cadoudal, la Sauldraie for the most important), the town is home to exceptional religious monuments. The church of St Maurice at St Aubin houses the most beautiful sandpits in Morbihan, these beams sculpted in churches during the Renaissance. On the road to Vannes, the Stations of the Cross of Callac (1958) is a place of pilgrimage much appreciated for its beauty and serenity. The 14 stations of this Stations of the Cross are composed of 57 life-size figures carved in granite. On this same site, do not miss the chapel of St Joseph.
Queen city of cycling
The reputation of the "Grand Prix de Plumelec - Morbihan" is well established for this circuit often described as the "most beautiful circuit in France"; a reputation of course linked to the quality of the line-up offered each year, but also to the presence on the course of the famous Cadoudal hill, made famous by Bernard Hinault during the Prologue of the 1985 Tour de France.
With its 2300 m length, an average gradient of 5%, this hill guarantees a quality show where twists and turns are not rare!
Several hiking trails to discover the riches of Plumelec
On foot, on horseback or by bike, the rich heritage of Plumelec can be discovered through the rolling landscapes typical of the Lanvaux moors. From the Neolithic period, we find in particular the beautiful listed dolmen of Milgourdy near the GR38. The village of Callac, the Stations of the Cross and the chapel of St Maudé are on the Callac circuit. To admire the sandpits of St Maurice, the fountain and the quarries, take the St Aubin circuit.
